Having covered 10 lifestyles that are absolutely forbidden, 3 motivations for righteous living and 2 criteria for lifestyles/pracices not mentioned, Paul now ends this chapter with a focus on porneia, translated "sexual immorality." Porneia is any misuse of sex, which is tantamount to any sex outside of marriage. Extrabiblical sources reaffirm the problem of sexual immorality in the ancient world. Like all other sins that the Corinthians were struggling with, sexual immorality was just another sin that was carried over into their lives. Althought these Corinthian believers were a "new creation in Christ" they still had to deal with their learned habits.
The solution to overcoming struggles and addictions carried over into our Christians lives is simple; namely, DOCTRINE plus APPLICATION, which leads to DELIVERANCE from ANY issue. Doctrine always precedes application. That is to say, the Believer must study the teachings Scripture before applying it. Here's an important priciple: You cannot APPLY what you do not KNOW, you cannot KNOW what you haven't LEARNED and you cannot LEARN what you do not take the time and effort to STUDY. Therefore, studying is the most important act of worship in which a Believer can partake.
Paul lays out several points of doctrine in this section followed up with 2 Commands; that is to FLEE from sexual immorality and to GLORIFY God with the body. Now go and do the same.
