I received a question recently: "Why is pornography so hard to quit?"
Pornography is hard to quit because it is essentially a spiritual battle that people tend to fight with physical means. In other words, people try to "fix" the pornography issue with behavioral modification without addressing the spiritual issues in the heart. In sum, behavioral modification is a cheap substitute for heart renovation.
We must remember the Word of the apostle Paul in Ephesians 6:12.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
If this passage is true, then we do not battle with pornography, per se, but rather the belief that it brings lasting satisfaction. That is called deception.
We do not battle with pornography, but rather the struggle with idolatry and seeking joy in something other than God.
We do not battle with pornography, but rather the struggle with pride in refusing to seek counseling on the issue.
We do not battle with pornography, but rather the struggle with self-condemnation, shame, and guilt, which hinders one from coming clean with a spouse, parent, friend, accountability partner, covenant members of a local church body or small group.
We do not battle with pornography; we battle with spiritual issues in the heart.
Again, why is it so hard to quit? because we tend to fight the spiritual issues with physical means/behavioral modification.
